WELCOME to the forum.
Couple of thoughts since this is obviously a used machine -but NEW to you?
1. YES it could very well be a bad sensor,or a broken wire
2. I'd check your coolant level. If it's VERY low on coolant this could throw the sensor off. Re-fill and let your machine IDLE up till the cooling fan kicks in to get any air out of the system - THEN put your cap on
3. speaking of fan - DOES IT COME ON? You may also have a bad fan motor...or BLOCKED fan from debris. I believe that if the ECM DOESN'T receive a signal from the fan it will trip the temp symbol.
4. pull your green 30amp MAIN fuse and disconnect the battery for about 5 min. Tends to re-set the gauge pod and a general ECM re-set.
Give your new ride a COMPLETE once-over. Check all your fluids and pay special attention to your wiring harness along the frame. Lot's of "pinch" points - especially just after the fuse block and up along the handlebars connecting to the gauge pod. A chafe'd wire can short out and throw all sorts of goofy readings.
As for your vent hose........new clamp.
Hope this helps

Good luck!
