First, what exact oil are you using.......Second, is there any free-play in the clutch cable? Third, yes you can just install the friction plates if the steel plates still look good, but not recomended.

but is engine oil for wet clutches? if its not drain it and use motor oil for wet clutches. i use Valvoline 10w-40 for wet clutches, and 20w-40 for summer(hot days).

You have to have some play in the cable or the clutch wont fully engage.... Probly your problem

you should be able to move the clutch lever (out-most point) 3/8 to 3/4 of an inch before it moves the clutch arm(freeplay). I stick around the 3/8 + a hair. If you are too tight, adjust the cable. If it is too tight, it is just like riding with your clutch partially pulled.

10w-40 is fine. As long as the oil is NOT "Energy Conserving", you'll be all set. Engery Conserving oil has friction modifiers that don't play well with wet clutches. Energy conserving oil usually has a starburst logo on the bottle.
