I rebuilt a 1981 xl 185 4stroke. Not sure if they are similar. 2 turns out was the starting point,,,,i eventually landed on 2 1/4.

agree w/Bing -

I'm two turns out, and idling fine -
you're doing the mixture screw ( small, underneath )
and not the idle speed screw ( on the side ),
right ?

Thanks for the info guys , I do appreciate the help.

I tried the 2 turns & it seemed to be idlling great (yes I did the one on the bottom of the carb), but when I rev it up, it stays revved up , and kind of slows down to Idle speed on it's own. (not quickly slowing down to idle speed like it should) It seems to do this after it gets warmed up too.

The throttle cable seems to be fine, it does not appear to stick at all.

I've had the carb apart, and rebuilt it with a kit. The only thing I could not replace was the the little shock/spring thing for the float bowl. The one in the rebuild kit did not fit. I'm not sure if that would have anything to do with it.
Any ideas on this one? Thanks again

I'm not an expert tuner, but . . .

I believe hanging at higher rpm ( not returning immediatley to
idle ) is a sign of running lean. Maybe go in 1/2 turn on the
mixture, and see if that affects it . . .

or, if you're not running a stock aircleaner, try restricting it just a bit . . .

this is assuming the throttle slide is moving freely . . if it is hanging up, that
would explain it to . . .
