Go for a CAT!!! Or am I being bias because i own one?

 

For your first quad i would lookin at gettin a 4 stroke over a two stroke. less maintance and less to worry about. If you can afford one, i would try and get a 400ex. They are an awesome quad. or a 300ex would be a great quad as well, i have owned both and loved them. I would lean to a 400ex it can do all the things you are looking to do and then some.

 

I think if youve never ridden a manual atv and want to learn how to i would go with the Honda 250ex or 300ex. They have just came out with the sportrax which would help any new rider. Also its a 4 stroke so you wouldn't have as much maintenace as you would on a blaster.

 

I don't mind maintenence, I actually love it! Plus I have my bro who's into automotive stuff to help me if I have a problem. I will check these quads out.

Does anyone else in your family ride? I would look at the 300ex/400ex and the Warrior also. All can easily be found in your price range. Heck, you should probably swing by a dealership and check out brand new. Personally, I like to buy locally so I can check the thing over in person before shelling out any cash. Nobody else in my family rides but my bro is into cars. He has a 91' Plymouth Laser that he modded the crap out of and he just got a Q-40 that he rebuilt from the junkyard=) so he can help me with the auto stuff.

Honda 400EX is the perfect bike for you.You can get it for a good price 2500-3000 and you wont need to upgrade for a while if at all.
