Z400 or Raptor 700 $500 Difference
Looking at getting a new sport ATV. I am considering a 2008 Z400 and a 2007 700R GYTR. The 700 is $500 more on the final price. Most of my riding will consist of trails but there is plenty of open area to run wide open if you want. Normally I go out west to Utah with my 4x4 to Moab about once a year, if I get a sport ATV I will at least go to the Little Sahara in Utah. Most riding will be around Illinois and Missouri. Which one would you guys choose?

While the Raptor is a thrilling torque monster, it carries its weight a little high in the frame and it is to narrow for my taste....that is to say that it is a little bit tippsy (but better than the old 660 was). If I had one, I would have to widen it (a-arms, axle, shocks), and that wouldn't be worth the extra expense. Plus, I don't much like the ergonomics of the Raptor either.......
The Z is certainly less powerful than the Raptor, but it's no slouch either.....tons of hop-up potential in that engine, with just a few simple mods! Excellent handling and a tight stable planted feel.
So, I give the nod to the Raptor for power and to the Z for handling. For me, the handling is more important, so I would get the Z.
Ride them both if possible!!!

There goes the $500 and it still will not have the power of a stock 700.

Meh, the Raptor does not handle as good as the Z, but the GYTR model comes with the YFZ shocks which are much better units than the Zuks. It does sit a bit higher too, but they aren't a death trap or anything. I agree riding them may be the difference maker. I have ridden a few 700's, and they don't feel right just coming off a 450. If that was your main ride though, you adjust and they are fine. You certainly wouldn't need new shocks even if you go wider up front. The stockers could be revalved and resprung for half the cost of midrange new and will work better than. Bottomline, you will be happy with either, and eventually will get bit by the upgrade bug I'm sure. Both are excellent quads that are proving themselves reliable rides.

both are good bikes and some good points made for each but $500 will get my vote for the GYTR raptor you compare it to. note that this is not a 'stock' raptor. it is 'factory modded' and has a little more umph than a normal one due to the GYTR stuff. the GYTR parts alone are prob about $500 if you price them out (at no discount). I cant find a left over GYTR. They dont have it in 2008. everyone on ebay is gone quick. Plus EFI. generally raptors are content to go slow or fast. the 660s were tippy but with the 700 getting the shared suspension parts with the YFZ450- it is wayyy better than the older raptor. the z400 is more of a revver due to its engine design. it think you'd appreciate the torque of the raptor more and its versatility and features.
