if you have time to wait go to eastwood catalog and they have everything you need to polish metal and seal it so it doesn't oxydize. i think their web site is www.eastwood.com i just start out with 180grit to get it all smooth then go up to 400grit then 600grit. if you can find ribbon sand paper it works best because you can wrap it around the bar and work it back and forth getting both sides. when you finish the sanding you can just use some mothers polish to get it shinny. the bar polish is a hard bar of polish that you apply to your buffing wheel. if you use the mothers don't put to much on or the buffing wheel will sling it all over you. you can buy some buffing wheels that go on drills that will cover a larger area. you can do the same thing on your rear axel to make it look good.
