how many clutch plates!!!???HELP!!!????!???!??
I am completely confused! I have an 03 DS and I smoked the clutch. Well I tore into it and counted 7 frictions and 8 steels. Now when I went and bought my new stock plates and frictions I had 8 of each! Hmmmmm. I got a schematic of the clutch set up from the dealer and it shows 8 of each. So did Bombardier forget one or what?! Plus I am questioning the "odd" plate. That is the outside plate right - the last one to go on? And it is offset from the others right? So it would line up with the shorter grooves and not the deep ones the other plates go in.

I just replaced mine for the 2nd time on the '04. Yes, there should be 8 of each in the basket. One of the friction plates flanges are milled slightly smaller than the other 7. That's the one that goes in the outside offset in the slots. Maybe you got screwed by Bombardier too. My bike had one of the oil check valves fall out after the first time I rode it. Their quality control is not too impressive.

I think I paid about 130 for mine. Don't forget the gasket although I didn't have to replace mine. Bad luck says you'll tear it if you're not careful. I put Pami springs in mine and it made the clutch hit harder. Its a lot harder to pull now but they're stronger than the Ron Woods springs too. Don't buy them if you have carpal tunnel syndrome!
Be sure to check the clutch activator. Thats the little shaft that comes out of the middle of the basket. I lost a tooth on mine and had to replace it too. It was another 30 dollars.

Yeah, I think I'll end up with a left forearm that looks like Popeyes after pulling on that clutch lever. That thing is tough. We just made a trip to Little Sahara and I burnt the clutch up in the first 3 hours. That sucked. But, now I have a spare clutch and know how to change them!
