probably shouldnt be using pump-gas with a CDI that advances 18 degrees. It sounds like the reason for the backfire is the pre-ignition, and as you all know the higher the octain the better pre-ignition tolerances. JMO

When they say advanced 18 degree's, I think they mean 18 above set timing.
Set timing is 10 degree's and the advance of 18 would mean a total of 28 degree's.
The factory timing is a total of 26 degree's.
All aftermarket CDI's draw more voltage. If your battery is not charged to the high side, you may have problems. The starter draws the major voltage and the remainder to the ignition.
If battery is low the ignition may not fire everytime it should. This loads the motor and when it does fire it may cause motor to suddenly stop or slightly backup. This is not good for starter.
Unless you ride your quad daily, you should charge your battery often. Or have a battery tender, so it is always ready to go. If my DS does not start within the first 5 seconds, I hookup the battery charger and come back in 30 minutes. I run a total of 30 degree's with a set timing of 14 degree's. 2001 with same starter.
Good battery and jetting is critical to DS's.
Aftermarket ignitions are all getting better. But they are not stock. If you want the extra performance, then there will be extra maintenance. Half the fun of modding a motor is taken care of it. If you do not like to do mainteance, then leave it stock and eat dust.

I've been running a SRP CDI (Pro-Comm I think)..for about 9 months..No problems yet...but just the last few times I've started her up, its been kinda making a weird noise ..backfire, not sure, but it sounds like the starter. I have a Odessey 545 battery, buts its now about a year old. Could I be having or starting to have some of the same problems I've been hearing about? Should I put the stock CDI back on? How do I know if I've damaged anything? Also, would a CDI like a Vortex give me the same problems?

Mine once in a while backfired which made a popping sound in the air box under the seat. It did it several times over the course of 6 months. The thing here is I only ride on Sundays with my son so it took a while to damage my bike. One day we went out to ride and my bike stalled. When I went to start it back up it made a grinding sound when starting but then it stopped. I started it up after that about three more time and every time I heard the grinding noise. I got it home took the side case of the motor and found that one of my gears was bent and I tore up my sprag clutch. The parts ended up costing me a round $500.00 and I did the fix myself. I will tell you this if your aftermarket CDI makes your bike start funny especially backfiring or popping take it off immediately or it will for sure damage your motor. Alot of guys don't know it but the motor on your quad is the same as the BMW Funduro. I ended up getting my sprag clutch from them for under $100.00 when all the Bombardier dealers wanted between $275.00 and $340.00.

If you go to Diagram #12 you will see the parts that got damage on my bike from the Procom CDI.
Parts # 11,12,15 and 20.

When was the last time you put dielectric grease on the battery terminals and the reg/recitifier connections. Maintenance is important. CDI's usually fail during its burnin range. First thirty days.
Also; what rpm does your engine idle at? Stay closer to 1400rpm. Butterfly covers low speed oriface and can cause the motor to slighly load and backfire.
