HPR 730 What Clutch?
#11
Vortex!
I didn't need a ring compressor. They told you a 20+ HP gain from just the 730 big bore with 13:1, ported intake and a 48 lectron? I am also running their race head with larger valves and their HPR3 cams. With these cams and the porting style they did on my head, my engine is great for all around dune and trail ridding. With more aggressive cams and larger head porting, it would be better suited for drag racing.
The intake can be a pain to take off the first time. Remove the bottom two bolts. Put your ball end allen in for the top one, I have a set that comes with a handle for extra torque, you could also you a vise grip on them for more torque. It that still won't break it loose, take a rubber mallet and gently tap the side of the intake so it rotates. This should break it loose.
As far as pulling the motor, I have done it both ways and I prefer to do it on the bench, especially if it is your first time. Installing the second C-clip in the piston was the most difficult part of the whole install for me. I have found it takes more time to get the engine ready to either tilt or pull then it does to do the actual engine work! With the tilt method you still have to remove all the engine mount bolts (except one, but you still have to loose it), you have to drain the coolant, and you mise well drain the oil too. You have to remove the chain and a few electrical connections.

Sandaholic, when I ordered my parts from Randall I asked him what kind of gain would I see. I already have their end cap, no toil filter, outerware,
Im running no air box. He said that I should see about 20hp stating 8 to 10 hp on the big bore alone at 13:1 compression. Another 8 or so from the lectron and a bit more with the race ported intake. Im assuming you havnt seen that kind of gain, your set up is similar with exception of the EFI and the porting. I emailed Eric a week ago and asked him where to start and he said go with the big bore kit and go up from there. Have you made any pulls on the dyno I would love to see your numbers. I have spoke quite bit to Randall and they have been extremley helpful. Have you had any trouble with your 730 kit? I hope that this $2700.00 is well spent. Anyone else out there have any thoughts on this? Please chime in

My 730 has been solid so far. I had some problems at first with my race head. It had either a bad valve seal or the porting was too aggressive and went into an oil passage. Either way they took care of it right away and made it all good. I actually just did a compression test today, 240 psi!!! The engine was warm but probably not yet up to normal operating temps.
I only have a few trips on the 730 and I don't think the efi was 100%, now I am running the newest version (still prototype I guess) which is tune on the fly and self adjusting. Its true plug and play, no user input needed. I decently feel that I picked up a few ponies as it feels a bit stronger.
I haven't got it on the dyno. Mainly because if I had the free time to do a dyno run then I would rather be out ridding! Also cost, for $75+ I could put it towards some light weight parts. I also think a dyno run just to get numbers is kinda pointless, without a base line test its just a number and nothing to compare it to.
For the clutch I am running the Barnett 9 disk, I heard they call it the HPR 9 disk clutch now? I am using the springs that came with the kit, I have heard they are softer then the stock springs! I have seen the 800 shred the barnett 9 disk with the barnett springs. Last time I was out ridding I was on dirt with the knobbies, a few times the rpm shot up like it was slipping but the dust cloud behind me probably meant the tires were spinning, not the clutch slipping. I was actually going to give Eric a call tomorrow and see what he is now recommending, it may be time to run the 9 disk with RWR 60% springs.

Sandaholic, So overall are you saying your happy with the hp gain going to the 730? I just talked to Randall and ordered the hv48 dual power jet and race intake. He said the dual power jet was making more power on the big bores (3 or 4) regardless of other mods. An extra $75 but for 3 or 4 extra i think thats money well spent. Are you coming up to dunefest july 27th to july 31. If you are we should hook up and go beat up some of the guys in blue. Im going to enter the sportsmen class at the drags. Randall and eric are going to be there. I want to see them hand it to tvi

I am definitely over all happy with my 730. It performs just like I want it to, stock like power band, just a whole lot more of it!
I talked to Eric today, he said he had a 730 on the dyno similar to mine, race head, 48hv, HPR 5 cams and the drag pipe, it was in the mid 70s. Since I am running less aggressive cams HPR 3 and a yoshi slip on, my peak HP won't be as high (nor do I care about peak HP!), but my torque and hp curve should be nice and flat.
I won't be making the trip to sand fest, but I am planning out going to DS days at Sand Mt. Nevada.

I forgot to mention about the clutch. I have been running the Barnett 9 disk with the springs that come with the kit. Last time I was out I felt it slip, but it was on a loose hard packed so most likely it was just blowing out the tires. I have a set of RWR 60% springs that I am going to throw in there. With my hydro clutch I probably won't notice the difference. Eric now carries his own line of clutch springs and I believe he mentioned something about a different version of the barnett 9 disk too.
