14-40, 15-40,17-38,15-42,14-38,16-38,dang I could go on. It really all depends on you and your machine. I have found that with a stockish to mild stage two, 15-42 seems to work good. But again there is so many factors. Give me some ideas of your machine, your size, and your riding style/area, and I might get you closer.

Yes. You can gear it higher, but if you dont have the horsepower to push it, it wont go. But a lttle can be done. If you still stock, 16-40, with a stock bike, you should be limited to 78 mph+/-. If you remove one tooth in the rear, you will gain about 3mph. If you go one gear in front you should gain about 8 mph roughly. Thats keeping everything else constant. With some mild mods you can gain that same mph with lower gearing and get there alot quicker.

Mostly evryone agreed that lowering the gearing was the way to go, so most went to a 15 tooth front. But thats contrary to what you asked for, Top Speed. So if you want a little more top end, you have your choice, get a 17 tooth front, or lower the back to like 38. The 38 back wont be as high as the 17 front, but I dont think your bike will pull the 17 front.

And the front is soooo much easier to change.

Just something else to think about.

Tire size is one of the biggest factors as well. What size tires are you running? 20" 22" etc.

DSEngineer is right. Go here to calculate what ever combination you want but keep in mind that you still need the power to push it.

Also, you can take a look at the Geering thread and see what I just posted on some real world tests.
