On car engines, remove sparkplug, and on the compression stroke get the piston EXACTLY on TDC. Into the sparkplug hole, screw in an adapter that connects to an air hose, and apply air pressure. Compress valve spring and remove keepers. Replave seal and re-assemble.
As you stated, I also didn't know if there are clearance problems for a spring compressor.

Does the engine have to come out to take the head off? What about the jug? If I have it down that far, I may ring it as well.
I have a spring compressor and know how to use it, as long as the seals don't have to be pressed in and out, I should be okay.
Where is the best place to get parts?

Air pressure sounds like a more practical way. I think I've seen my dad do that before with a home made device.

No, disconnect everything off the head then pull the motor mount brackets and bolts in the front and loosen the back motor mount so you can rock the motor down in the front. This will allow the mounting part of the head to slip past the cross member. Have fun with those exhaust header bolts.
