Default Alky Setup for DS - suggestions

Smitty,

Thanks sooooo much for the helpful tips, it's great to see such a master bestow his great wisdom on us lowly rabble (ROTFLMFAO). Is that what helped you *suck* so bad at FSW too? j/k In response to having a good running quad, all I can say is that my machine's only seen the shop for scheduled maintenance, while yours has taken permanent residence....does Harry get to claim you on taxes now? Also, in order to race, you've got to be able to get to the riding area, are you going to walk your quad from here to Dumont? Sounds like the race truck needs some help too (I've got a 12 guage and a shovel out back.... no one will know As for the other stuff, you're right...still need some experience, but having a little extra juice won't hurt. Rear shock'll be back from TCS tomorrow, final setup this weekend and we'll see how it runs.

And, **IF** you're my CEO, where's my check, punk!

WP, as I said above, you're probably right on both accounts, and I'd stop giving your 'dad' rides unless he pays up front for gas.

All in good fun,
Neosirfir

Getting back to the lube, I would say the KY is more of a bottom end lube than a top end lube. LOL Hahahahaha, I kill myself. I've been taking lessons from Biggerisbetters school of comedy.

Default Alky Setup for DS - suggestions

Um, glad we're all in to being sensitive, and sharing intamacy tips, but can we steer slightly back on topic for a minute?

I've got my HSR45 w/accel pump installed with the biggest main jet and pilot jet and am ready to go tomorrow to El Mirage, CA for a little test and tune. I did, however, start it up and run up and down the street a little and did notice a significant improvement. While I still think I'm a little on the rich side of the jet needle (will change grooves tomorrow), everything is running great (thanks Boxman!!). Anyway, one final questions for those on alky 4strokes so that I can properly tune tomorrow:

What mixture should I use for top end lube in 5 gallons of methanol. I've heard anywhere from one ounce to 5 ounces, to more....anyone have a solid idea on it? Is one oz. enough? Does it hamper performance at all?

I bought motul's 800 synthetic premix oil for two strokes, dealer recommended (although he wasn't too familiar with running alky)...suggestions?

Thanks, nEoSirFirrrrrrrr (oops, I think the alcohol is getting to me already )

Default Alky Setup for DS - suggestions

Well, let's bring this thread back to the top 'o the heap Hopefully I'll give you guys and gals something fun to read as well.

My tuning day for the HSR45 at El Mirage went great! First of all, I would like to thank everyone for their help and suggestions...I'll try to list / detail what worked for me, but let me know if I've missed anything. First of all, in the **much** debated lube category, I got some synthetic Motul 800 two-stroke pre mix oil. I mixed 2 capfuls with my 5 gallons of methanol. When first dropped in, the oil dropped straight through and "globulized" at the bottom. After whining incessantly for a couple seconds that I ruined my first batch, I shook the crap out of the can for about 5 minutes and lo and behold, everything mixed just fine. It also stayed that way, no separation even today (2 days later), so I'm pretty happy about that.

Now, on to tuning: Armed with the trusty Mikuni tuning manual (that seems to be written for Harleys for some reason ), set of tools, truck, wife, 5 gallons of go-juice, and (oh yeah) the DS Banana, we set off for El Mirage Dry Lakebed in sunny Southern Cal. As setup by Boxman, the carb had the largest main jet (210 I think), the -95 Needle (richest one they make) and not sure which jet on the accelerator pump.

The first thing was to tune the idle circuit...this was pretty easy by just adjusting the air mixture screw on the left hand side. Starting out, it took about 2.5 turns out from gently seated, but as the needle was tuned, this required some more tweaking. Luckily it was easy to change as this and the idle speed screw were needed throughout the second process.

Second (and actually the rest of the day) was the needle. Since I already had the biggest main jet in the beast, my problems were going to be in the 1/2 to 3/4 range of throttle. And sure enough, we had some. I started out on the 2nd ring from the top of the needle and certainly found the acceleration in this range to be flat as a pancake, but when it got past that...the pull was great. It was a real pain to have to feather the clutch and 'baby' the motor in low RPM, so more work was needed.

Third ring from the top and the acceleration improved, but was still a bit jerky and unpredictable, this is also the point where I found that I had to re-adjust my idle circut to complement the new needle setting. More work to do:

Fourth ring from the top and now we're really cooking!! Smooth consistent throttle response from idle thorugh WOT, it was like a new machine!!! Thorughout all of this tuning, I noticed that we're getting quite a bit of backfire, especially on roll off from Wide Open to 3/4 or 1/2. On the fourth ring, however, the backfire and such wasn't as prevalent. I did a plug check after racing into camp at breakneck speed, pulling the clutch and cutting the throttle (scared the wife half to death) and it was as clean as the day I bought it (supposedly a good sign that I'm not running too lean on alky).

So, being the inquisitive mind that I am, I tried the 5th ring from the top, same awesome acceleration, but this time, backfiring is back a little more, so I'm not sure if it's pushing the limit. It also really affected the idle circuit, such that dialing it back in was a bit of a chore. I've heard that you can't run too rich on Alcohol, but if you run lean, it's bad business.

At this point, I've left it on the 5th ring, but after some thought will probably move it back down to the fourth ring as that's where I had the least amount of problems.

So, at the end of the day we have:
1-2 Capfuls of Motul 800 Premix per 5 gallons of straight Methanol (mix thoroughly)
Mikuni HSR 45MM Carburator with Accelerator Pump
Largest Pilot Jet with 2 turns out, 210 Main Jet, -95 Jet Needle with clip on 4th Groove.

This was great fun tuning it in, I can't wait for President's day weekend, we'll see how she runs in competition. Thanks again (and sorry for the long post, just wanted to give everyone a chance to learn)

Later,
NeoSirfir

Great reading! ! ! I'm 99.9% sure the main jet was a 250. Looks like Neo Sirfir will be having toasted "chicken" for his President's Day meal!! LOL
