Ignition help?
#1
I’m working on a 125cc ATV, I was looking for a problem as to why I couldn’t get power to start the atv, checked the battery it was fine. Went to rewire the old key switch up (at this point there is no power whatsoever, neutral light wouldn’t come on nothing) so as I’m peeling the insulation off I accidentally touch the red and black wires together and like magic the green light for neutral came on and even though it wouldn’t fire up it was trying to turn over. Fast forward 10 minutes and the red and green wires touch, make a little zapping noise and all of a sudden no power when red/black are touching. Anybody have any idea what I did? And why these wires weren’t working when plugged into the connector but do work when I touch them together manually? The key switch was brand new and matched up perfectly to the atv but yet wouldn’t allow power to it. Sorry for weird wording but I made a little progress only for me to end up in the same spot so any and all help would be greatly appreciated

Green is usually earth, red probably pos from fuse, if you connect red and green together, you blow the fuse. Unless you know which wire goes where on an ignition switch don't mess with it, you could end up connecting kill wire from CDI to positive, and blow your CDI.

Well that’s good to know I didn’t meant to touch the wires together I was twisting the red and black together to try and turn it over and they just kind of touched, will check the fuse tomorrow. Would you be able to tell me why the wires weren’t working inside the plastic connectors? Like why the key wasn’t throwing the red and black wires to start it? That was definitely the problem the, few days I’ve had it that’s the first time I’ve seen it show any life and it almost turned over

When you say the new key switch "matched up perfectly" did that mean all the wire colors matched or just the connectors? I've had key switches that will plug together, but the wires were in the wrong place in the connector causing no start and blown fuse.

Don’t know if this helps or not but that’s the atv, maybe you know where to get OEM parts for it??
That could be the problem honestly, I wonder if the ignition switch has a part # for it, I’m not 100% on the exact model but it’s one of those generic Chinese atvs with the black and white camo (or lightning is what I think it looks like) I just figured they were all universal parts

It looks like the usual Tao Tao or Coolster ATV. I would try vmcchineseparts.com. Even if you order the correct key switch it doesn't mean it was wired properly at the factory. Definitely check the wire colors at the connector.
