I have a transmission problem with my 2000 Warrior, and need some help figuring out what the problem might be. When riding this past week I noticed a shifting problem, no grinding or anything, just that it wasn't going into each gear as smoothly as it did when new. I checked the clutch adjustment and it seems okay, although at first the lever had a bit too much freeplay, but adjusting it towards the tight side didn't seem to have an effect or improve shifting.

Another problem it seems to be having concerns the only the first three gears. When starting from first I sometimes miss the shift to second unless I "really" pull up on the shift lever, and even then it seems to "pop into second" rather than "go into second"...I guess the best way to explain this is that it isn't very smooth and feels way too notchy. Also, when riding and then stopping without completely downshifting to first, for instance if I'm in third and then pull in the clutch and brake, it won't go into first gear. Pushing down on the lever feels as if you've already hit bottom (first), but it's actually still in third and won't go into first without pulling forward a foot or so, and even then it just doesn't feel right as it moves down to first gear. Overall, I guess the best explanation I can give here is that the first three gears seem to be too notchy...the movement into gear seems vague at first and then notchy when it goes into gear.

I guess I should also mention there have been quite a few instances that after using reverse, moving the lever forward doesn't disengage reverse. Backing up further sometimes helps disengage it, otherwise I have to kill the engine to move the lever into the forward position. This problem might be an adjustment of the reverse shift lever and not be related to the tranny problem, but who knows.

Anyhow, I don't think this problem is a clutch adjustment problem, and I really don't think the transmission itself is bad, it seems as if the shift lever linkage is out of adjustment. My Clymer manual doesn't list a procedure for adjusting the shift lever, but since it has a shaft with locknuts on both ends, there is obviously an adjustment that could be done. Has anyone with a Warrior experienced the problems I've described, or had to adjust the shift lever to smooth out shifting problems? If so, I'd really like to hear what you did to fix it.

Duh...I figured out what the small linkage was between the shift lever and input shaft...adjusts the pedal up and down. :>) I also messed around with the quad itself a little tonight, and it seems I can roll it into a position while in neutral where it won't go into first or second. Is this normal? Doesn't seem so to me...

Sounds like possibly a bent shifting fork in the tranny. If the quad is still in warranty you should be able to get Yamaha to replace it. Ihad to raise my shifter in order to get the toe of my Sidi boot under it. Other than that the position doesn't affect shifting at all.

hot_shoe_cv...thanks for the advice. I also thought about dropping the oil and going with a better brand thinking that might help with the notchiness. The last time I changed the oil I went with a 4-stroke motorcycle oil by Quaker State that met all of the service specifications, but a friend added he's experienced the same type of notchiness that was cured by a good oil. Still perplexed about the problem with getting it into first after stopping...starting to feel it might just be a mechanical problem.
