utility quad for fast trail riding
#22
I like the Honda's suspension- but the lack of a front locking diff is enough to keep me looking at other atv's- I've seen a few rincon's stuck in mud holes in 3wd- I used to ride with an aggressive trail rider in rhode island who had an 06 rincon- was always getting stuck in the mud holes even with mud tires. I also don't like the electronic shifter up on the bars- though I understand honda's have one of the best transmissions out there- from what I've read anyway-
fwiw- I consider the renegade a sport quad with wicked awesome traction and killer lines

If you want my classification of a Renegade/Wolverine/Scrambler I would classify them as crossovers. As to be called a sport quad is just plain wrong. Sport quads are 2wd and lightweight, and you wont ever see one competing in a sport quad race! I.E. MX track.

Time for my .02 worth. I'd say hands down the Renegade is the best mix of utility and sport out there. Best power per cc and a good suspension system. Not as fast in corners as a straight axle but the IRS is great for clearance on rough trails that you'd slow down for on a SRA. If it's all pretty smooth I'd just go with a regular 2wd sport quad. But if you want a utility frame and capability with 4wd for the rough terrain, and mud I'd go with either the Renegade or the XP 850. My son't been everywhere I've gone since he got the Rene a couple months ago. Hope to get out to the headlight deep holes soon to see how it does.

Ima gona stick my neck out again and say this ...can am renegade is a nuts machine! but not utility at all. I'm gonna give you my Honest Experience me and my buddies have everything King Quads GRizzlys Brute force and a few flavors of Polaris .. I don't even know how to put this I have a 2007 Rincon I have raced them all in a straight line yes the grizzly beats it by like 2 quad length in a fairly long race same with the brute 650 but they also have CVT with no shifting which is a serious advantage in a straight line drag race. the polaris around alot is a 550 we are pretty much even i get him by a nose. The handling on this RINCON DESTROYS CRUSHES the handling on all said machines in any technical fast riding its not even FAIR! I have driven them they are powerful yes but they are tall and clumsy.. If we race on a railroad bed that has maybe a couple rolling whoops or just some deep ruts the race ends fast cuz those other machines just don't handle well the rear ends bounce way up and they swirve all over the place.
If your gonna drag race and go into giant mudholes all day by all mean get a grizz sportsman or a brute..
If you want a machine that handles almost like a sport quad jumps awesome does wheelies and drives as smooth as butter and still has plenty of ooomphh to put you in a tree all day go try a rincon don't let all this horsepower talk turn you off those numbers mean nuthin in most situations.

All this talk about speed.....in a utility quad.......
I'll throw in my .02¢....
If ya just wanna go fast.........get a 1000 AC THUNDERCAT. There.
Throw a $130 swaybar on it.......yer done. I won't try and justify all it's comparable downfalls to other brands as out of 3 pages my post is the 2nd one about a CAT.........it's just plain STUPID fast.

How fast do you really need to go? I'd rather have the bottom end then the top-
I'm not very impressed with the 1000 AC THUNDERCAT from what I've been watching on youtube-
I still think for an overall sport utility, can-am makes that line just about as blurry as can be- anyone who says you can't do on a renegade what you can do on a sport, simply hasn't ridden one. I've seen people grab some amazing air on a sport ute like an outlander or a renegade (myself included)

I gess I have to ask what type trails and where are you going fast. I ridden mountains, swamps, forest, and mud. I don't believe I have ever gone over 25 mph. Any faster and you will eventually be hurt if not dead. Heck even in pastures we don't open them up.

In woods I'd give the nod to the Renegade 500 over the 800 simply because the 800 has so much power it tends to lighten the front end on acceleration. Not good when weaving through the trees.

Same here on our "TRAILs" we ride with all kinds or ATVs, a guy with a 800 Outtlander can leave a 350 Grizzly behind. 25 mph tops for very short sections at most. Show me a 50mph trail and i'll show you a road.
