gas in the oil of a 300ex!!!
#1
hey guys, i checked the oil in my 300ex today and it was pretty thinned out. at first i wondered if i had got some water in it, but it wasnt a milk shake. then i smelled it and it had a hint of gas in it. so no im thinkin that gas has got into the oil and thats what has thinned it down. but how? i never turn my fuel off, so could that be it? or could it be runnin rich enough that some of it is gettin past the ring? also, what type of oil do yuns recommend running in a 300ex? thanks, nathan.

I really doubt there is gas in the oil...regaurdless of wheater or not you turn off your fuel...it would have to be quite a bit of gas..and then it would not drip down past the rings.....oil gets thin from being used...Maybe gas dripped out your overflow when you changed the oil and went into the oil bucket....I can't see how gas would be in there....

Many possibilities. In some cases where the oil is really old some people claim they can smell gas in it but it seems normal to me. If it is running rich, over time it could increase the amount of gas in the oil. Or if the carb is dirty and somebody has ridden it with the choke on cause it runs better that way. Or if the rings are shot. A more drastic thing would be a stuck float, if the overflow tube inside the float bowl is obstructed, it can flow through your airbox and into the engine through the crankcase vent tube. You would have a way overfull crankcase tho. Sometimes hauling them with the gas turned on can cause fuel to spill into the spark plug area which can end up going by the rings into the crankcase. Flipping the machine on its side to work on it can spill gas. Change oil and if it runs ok, just keep your eye on the level. Shut your gas off when you haul your ride or tip it on its side to work on it.

wow, finally i got some responses! i have only had the quad fer a few weeks and have put about 10 hours on her. today was the first time i have changed the oil also. i called several honda dealerships and asked them bout it and they talked like it wasnt a big deal and that it was pretty common??? said its really bad on the atv's that they pull in and out of the show room floor everyday. anyhow when i changed it it didnt smell as gassy as i thought it did the other day, but it did seem to have alot of metallic in it. i figured it was from the clutch. thanks fer the responses, nathan.

Don't know the EX but all other Hondas with carbs have a pipe running down from the base of the float bowl. If the float needle sticks open, the fuel overflows and runs down this pipe onto the ground. If someone blocks it or lifts the pipe up, fuel overflows into the airbox and cylinder, down the breather pipe and into the crankcase.
