400 EX sprocket sizes?
Right now i am running stock 15/38. anyone run anything else? I was thinking about trying maybe a 16/36. less of an angle on the chain. Anyone doing this or any good reasons to or not to? I have some engine mods you can read in my sig. and i ride mostly dunes. if that matters. thanks for any info.

68 is nothing to brag about with those engine mods. A stock bike will do 65 to 68 mph. You must be running some small rear tires. (less than 20"). Anyway....the problem with running a 16 tooth front sprocket is that you have to either remove/or shave down your case saver to make things fit properly. It will give you more top-end, but take away from your low end power. With the 14 tooth in the front, you gain low end power, but loose around 5 mph on the top end. Decreasing a tooth or two in the rear will increase your top speed. For riding in the sand (which robs alot of power) I use 14/36 gearing. It was just enough to be able to climb the big hills in 3rd, and not lose alot of top speed. For the dirt/trails, I run 14/38. It works great. I'm putting a piston/cam in really soon, and then I'm going to have to re-evaluate my gearing. But for a stock motor with pipe/filter/jetting....what I wrote works really good.

D-ICK FACE, I am not bragging, I am just giving an idea of how fast you can go with that size gearing. By the way, a stock 400ex only does 59mph, that comes from the trinity racing dyno. My bike does well over 73mph, because I can pull on a stock raptor that does 72mph according to DIRT WHEELS MAG.

Relax there kid. There are too many sensitive people like you on here. Anytime someone says something contrary to what someone like you says, you get all bent out of shape. GROW UP....These forums are here for people with different opinions. I didn't even rip on you, I was just trying to figure out why a 440 was only going 68 mph. I was guessing that you had 18" rear tires since you "say" that you race motocross. And, reading top speed from a dyno off of a website (or even better Dirtwheels) isn't worth a hill of beans. Many utility quads can go 55 mph or faster. Are you saying that the 400ex is only as fast as a big 500 pound 4x4 quad. Borrow a GPS from someone, or ride with someone that has a speedometer. Get the hard facts, and quit guessing.
Try and remember that this thread was about gearing, not about your ego.

I was not braging, I was just giving an idea of how fast one can go with that size gearing. Speaking of utility quads, dont forget what won the baja 1000 last year, it wasn't a sports quad and I believe that thing weighed around 500 pounds. I don't think you know more than dirtwheels. Those guys do testing for a living, what do you do! I am not here to pick a fight, but you came in like you knew it all putting down what I replyed. STEVE7467, asked for advice on gearing, not for two guy to talk crap to each other. Just look at how you came at me. Read your first line "68 is nothing to brag about with those engine mods". Once again, I was not braging and if you were not ripping on me, then I'll stop here.
