i just put my engine back together but the clutch doesn't want to engage so i can shift, what did i do wrong

 

It could be several things so I'm not much help but don't feel bad. I recently got my atc200x engine back together after replacing the clutch plates and reworking the kick start gears. As you probably know this requires total break down. Well I struggled through it only to try to test it but it seems as if 1st gear is 5th so after all my work I have to break it apart to redo the transmission which must have assymbled wrong.
