first oil change is fairly soon (10 hours??). then it's like every 100 hours. your manual should tell you the recommended oil change intervals.
BUT on engine break-in, i read an article about riding hard and fast for break in, heats up rings and cylinder better= longer life. I can't recall all the tech jargon, but the guy had taken apart several engines broke in hard VS. the way the owner's manual tells you to do it. the hard break-in engines lasted WAY longer before needing rebuild. it's a link someone else posted in one of these forums.. maybe someone else will remember it. definitely worth researching. i'll be doing the hard break in for sure next time.

I do my first oil and filter change very early, like 1 hr. This is when you will get the worst stuff, like metal shavings and fibers from the clutch. Best to get that stuff out of there as soon as possible. Then I change it again at 10 hrs.
Break it in hard, like Motoman recommends! http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I change our oil every 500 miles. First oil change was at 100 miles and the second oil change was 400 miles later. I use Honda filters and Valvoline ATV oil. 5000 miles and zero problems. The oil I drain out is really pretty clean. Our Rancher gets the oil changed a lot more often because we ride it less. It got changed in the fall and we only put 200 miles on it last year. You can't change it too often.
Oh, and buy a dozen or so drain plug gaskets and replace them every time you change your oil.

They are the small aluminum gasket that goes around the drain plug. When you reinstall the drain plug, you tighten the plug until you feel the gasket "squish". You will feal the plug get tight, and stop. It keeps the plug from leaking and when used correctly it will help preserve the threads in the case. The case is aluminum and the threads will pull out and strip if the drain plug is repeatedly over tightened.
If you have a torque wrench, use it at first to get a feel for how tight the drain plug shoud be.
Hope this helps.
