You have made a lovely choice. I have swamped mine 3 times, been flipped frontwards, backwards, sideways, bounced off the rev limiter every time out, you name it I have done it and it still works great.
The 424 install for me was not bad, you are basically replacing the front driveshaft, the directions that come with it are good as well. It took me about 2 hours with plenty of beer breaks and a buddy. We stood the bike up on end to make it easier to get at.

congrats on the quad purchase, they are bulletproof machines. I especially like the design of these engines, they are a push-rod type engine that mounts the cam in the engine block instead of up on top, quicker to lubricate and lasts longer. The stator coil and charging coil are mounted inside of a cover on the engine, not directly under the recoil where water can get in.
as for the 424, it's the best mod you can put on the machine, and it takes about 2 hours to install, quicker if you have another person to help. The instructions are pretty good, too. As for mounting the control, It gives you a mounting plate that you're supposed to screw into the plastic. Instead, I bought a couple small u-bolts and bolted it to my front rack where i can still reach it, but I didnt have to drill the plastic, so i could take it off and the plastic wouldn't look all crappy.
have fun and happy trails!

Thanks for the help guys. I think I'll see if Santa will bring me a 4-2-4. I finally got to play with the Rancher today. I just got it Friday.Had a blast on it. I went this morning and picked up an '01 250 EX. I thought this would be a good bike for my kids...WRONG!! I was surprised at the power the little 250 had. It is a great bike too.

I installed a Warn 424 on my 05 Rancher and I did it alone. It took me roughly 3 hours total, but then I'm 53 years old and have problems with old "arthur" in my legs. If you can get a helper...by all means do it.
I fastened my control to the plastic because I don't feel like I will ever take the unit off the machine.
I bought mine off Ebay also. Best 215 bucks I ever spent on anything that made such a difference on an atv.
