Warn 1.5 on an 05 Rancher 4x4
Want to equip the wife's Rancher with a winch and was considering the Warn 1.5. I see it has the mechanical brake included, which I kind of like the idea of. I'm getting the 3.0ce or xt for my Rancher (that's my plan anyway, I'm know for changing my mind) and know they are a metal casing. I've heard the 2.5 models are not as water tight as the 3.0 and they have the plastic casing. I was wondering if the 1.5 had the plastic casing and how it was for being water tight. I doubt either Rancher would ever get in water up to the winch, I'm just curious about these things. And, beings as how the winch is mounted behind the frame, the plastic casing wouldn’t be a bother to me either. How about the power of the 1.5 on a Rancher, good enough for pulling it up an incline that the ATV cannot pull itself up? Would a ****** block make it more efficient? Thanks for any info.

Personally, I'd at least go with the 2.5. If you get stuck in a mud hole, you might not have enough cable to reach if you double up with a ****** block.
I'm told that the gears on the 3.0 are better sealed than on the 2.5 but neither motor is sealed?
Anyhow, I've had to run my 2.5 under water. I followed advice I got here and ran the cable in and out a couple of times to warm it up and dry it out, and it is still working perfectly.

Does the 1.5 and 2.5 have the plastic housing? RE: the 3.0, I was under the impression the motor was sealed on that one, maybe that is not the case. The wifes Rancher wouldn't be any place without mine, I just don't feel the need for another 400.00 winch on her machine too. If here machine were to get stuck, mine would be there with the bigger winch. If I could find a good enough deal on the 2.5 I would definetly go that route. Right now, I could get the 1.5 for a tad over 200.00 and it may very well never get used. I'm more interested in rigging that one out

If you are going to go small on the wifes then why waste $200. My 2 winches are 2000# copies of some better known model. Got them at Harbor Freight for $49. I converted to a contactor system but they work fine. Especially since I usually stay out of the heavy duty stuff. Your wife probably will to. The HF winches don't come with a mounting plate. I made a multi mount set up for mine, front or back. What good is a winch on the front if you are nose down in a mud hole.
I find it hard to put a $400 winch on an ATV, unless it comes with a $300 rebate.
