2001 Rancher carb problem / float sticking
#11
Just when I thought it was fixed. I installed a new float, filter and new fuel line. The atv starts and runs perfect. Sat in the garage for three days with no leaks. Walk out today and it is leaking from the overflow tube again. I started it and it runs fine, drove it around thinking it would knock the sticking float loose, no luck, as soon as I shut the engine off it starts leaking again. I do not know what else to replace or try to get this leak stopped!

Sorry LittleBill, I did do the procedure you mentioned. It did stop it from leaking but my leak came back a couple days later. I believe it is still getting junk from somewhere in the fuel system. Guess I'll go about my own ideas and stop bothering by asking for ideas!

Honda carbs leak if the float needle has a fault or if dirt gets stuck between needle and seat. Never known a float to become porous but you would notice fuel slopping about inside it if it did. Quick fix is to turn tap off, run until engine stalls, turn tap on, the resultant rush of fuel past a wide open needle may dislodge any dirt. If that doesn't work, remove float bowl, float and needle, blow seat out with compressed air, check needle's little plunger bobs back up when you press it and Viton tip is clean and undamaged. Dirt in the float chamber indicates dirt in the tank. Dirt is very difficult to remove from tank so, if the problem keeps coming back, even with a new needle, fit an inline filter. Not a panacea as the paper element type air locks if run dry, so will not let fuel through again if you run out and turn on reserve.

Also to add to merryman advise if trash is in carb you may need to remove fuel value(petcock) and fuel gauge to clean good sometimes through the year fuel gauge will get buildups an if keep using as-is the dirt buildup keep getting into fuel an get flushed into the line also inside of fuel line starts breaking down an very small powder like specks gets dumps into carb/
