05 Rincon 680 Rev Problem
A few days ago I was pulling my brothers around in a sled behind my fathers Rincon and just as i was going to pull it in the garage the RPM's suddenly spiked up and it fell out of gear, but the **** still said it was in D. Now every time it is started, it will rev at a normal level and then after a few seconds it will spike up again. If it is in a gear when it revs up, i will internally go into neutral but say it is D and if I give it enough throttle, the RPM's will drop a bit and it will start to move again... but the second you let off throttle it will rev up really high. I checked the throttle cable and it is not seized in anyway, also since it has the efi there is nothing on the carb that i would understand how to adjust. Any one have any ideas on what caused this and what the solution may be? Thanks much

I don't know why the display is still showing D when it's in N, unless it wasn't all the way into the N detent, but the reving up thing might be due to the IAC hanging up.
If it's still under warranty, let the dealer mess with it. If not remove and disassemble the IAC to remove the factory grease and replace with light oil.

Didn't think abou throttle cable adjustment... Should be 1/8 to 5/16 freeplay at the end of the thumb throttle. If there isn't there is an adjuster on either end of the cable.
Since this cropped up during the cold, it made me think about the IAC since there have been threads about them sticking apparently due to the grease getting thick in cold weather.

It was the IAC, it needs to be taken apart and the grease needs to be cleaned out and replaced with a light oil (as i found on another forum). It had also said to tap on the IAC with a wrench, i did so and it did fix the problem. Later when i have some more time I will replace the grease but this was a simple temporary fix. Thanks for all the help.

Well, I don't want to pop their bubble, but the IACV is installed dry. No oil or grease. If an oily or greasy substance is on the IACV from the factory, it is the shipping coating has sucked into the IACV slide and has gummed or hardened up. No where does Honda recomend oil or grease on the IACV during install.

I don't know if it's grease or some sort of contamination that resembles grease, but if high idle suddenly crops up during cold weather, cleaning whatever it is out of the inside of the IAC seems to be the cure...
If you rap on the IAC with a screwdriver handle while it's high idling, if it temporarily returns to normal that seems to confirm the diagnosis.
I know nobody greases them during install, but is there grease up inside the IAC from when it's built?
