Rincons Trans
#1
I am a Semi weekend warrior and while riding my local club in 40 degree temps I was going alone fine and the 05 rincon just stoped goin forward. Drive or any gear did not matter. I check for codes and there was none. It was just like you diconnected the trans from the drive shafts, as if you put it in neutral. When you put it up on a lift the tires move a little in 3rd, but I can stop them with my foot. I tried changing the oil and that didn't help. All the connections seem good and tight. I only have 1700 miles on the machine and I am the 2nd owner. Went 2 years with no problems at all. Can any one help?

My guess is that you may have had the oil pump drive chain fall off...
Some early ones had a oil seal that could fail and the result would be poor shifting, but I think yours is too new (would have updated parts) and also the symtoms of sudden loss of all movement both forward and reverse would have me thinking drive chain.
If that's the case, in addition to no oil pressure to operate the transmission, there would be no oil pressure to the motor, so if that's what it is, don't run the engine until you get it fixed.
Anyhow, I think first step would be to check the oil pressure...

There are some o-rings that seal oil galleries, between the front cover and the oil pump. I found Rincons with the same issue you have described that had the o-rings cut or pinched during assembly at Honda. They get damaged during install as there is an alignment dowell in the center of them. When the dowel or o-ring are not aligned right, the o-ring gets damaged. The transmission fails to recieve oil pressure as result to the valve body. A main oil line pressure check will reveal this issue. Also, I have seen oil pump bypass valves fail also. If the engine runs fine with no ticking from oil starvation, I would look into the o-rings though as the relief valve issue will starve the entire engine of oil and make the motor tick or knock. Most likely, an o-ring finally blew
Hope this helps

Interesting... I didn't think O rings were supposed to be a problem on the later ones.
Anyway, I suppose the way to proceed would be to check pressure, and if low take it apart and what's wrong should be evident.

Yes, when the front cover is installed, the dowells and o-rings are installed onto the engine. If caution is not taken the dowell and o-ring will fall out when the cover is thumped to slide over the componemt bearings installed in the front cover . I found 2 with the o-ring and dowell laying in the bottom of the front cover. Also a number of bent and deformed dowells/o-rings as a result of carelessness while the covers were installed. Heck, I am carefull and have even seen them slip out of place while thumping the cover with my rubber mallet to install the cover
I seen only one clutch pack go south over the years... can't rule that out also
By the way, I have a good valve body and a good linear solenoid laying around if needed

Thanks for all your input guys. Got it all apart and found the oil pump drive chain fell off the sprocket. Too bad Honda desinged it so that u have pull the eng and the head to fix it. Way to go Honda.

From the way you described it, it sounded like it suddenly went from shifting suddenly to nothing, which made me think it would be the chain...
At least you found the problem.

Yea I found it, and thats what I thought, but when I called my local dealer for some input about my chain falling off the service gut I talked to told me that the rincon does not have an oil pump. They have a torque converter. WHAT???? You still need an oil pump! Don't get me wrong, I love my rincon ( my 1st machine after doing some research) but a Honda service tech made me go against my better judgement. My dealer told me that they never heard of this problem before, but according to this site and a few others it's happpened before. Maybee Honda sould subsrcibe to some Honda sites to get some better info. Thanks to people like you and this site we can get some good info that everone could use.
