Warn 424
Hey all,
Finally got around to installing the 424 on my Rancher 350. I am having some trouble with locking it into 2 wheel drive.
I followed the directions and adjusted it till the **** consistently locked when pulled. When I took it for a spin tonight the **** wouldn't lock. I adjusted it some more and took another spin only to find the **** wouldn't lock into place when I pulled it. I adjust and adjust, but its not locking in consistently.
Any advice?
thanks
Bob

Did you get it fixed yet? The only things I could suggest are to make sure the cable is making a smooth curve (not kinked). Maybe try adjusting the cable out as far as possible and make very small adjustments back in until it locks. I realize you've probably tried these things. I've had one for several years now the only time I've had that happen is when dirt and water finally corrode the inside of the unit and it has to be taken apart to be cleaned. Let us know if you figure it out.

I have a 424 on my 99 300fw- I've had it a couple of years and it only locked out (disengage) the first week- after that it wouldn't lock. Now, I just pull it out and it pretty much stays out, occasionally it creeps in, but not too often. I've contemplated removing it and going back to all-time 4x4 but, it's really nice having 2x4 on the tight flat trails.
I HAVE had problems with it not engaging into 4x4 when I push the **** in- it just grinds. It usually works itself out and eventually slips into 4x4- but this only usually happens when I try to engage while under load up a steep incline.
I'm still considering removing it-

You probbaly need to service it. Its a great product, but over time the seal in the middle of the gearbox fails letting in dirt & Mud. You need to dissasemble, clean out all the crud, probably replace the bearings inside, regrease, make a new seal with form-a-gasket and reassemble. Grease the cable, adjust and it should be like new.

Hey jetlag-
All I had to do to fix this was to remove the black **** and disassemble the cable (the part you push & pull mounted on the fender) I used white grease and cleaned it really good. it worked like new. Make sure you remove every spring and give it a good cleaning. It took me all of 30 minutes and all I used for tools was an allen wrench & a few box wrenches- was pretty simple.

ok then- remove the purple **** and clean it up.
white lithium grease is a light white spray grease that can be found in the automotive section at any walmart, home depot, lowes or auto parts store. Most likely next to the wd-40 & spray silicon.
just use a little bearing grease if that's all you have in the shed.
