the best way is to meet up with another 250r and move parts around til you know what it is. I hate to say it but it is prob. inside stator. But try coil, cdi, first. I just went though this and it ended up being the stator. thx Jeff

Yeah, I wish I could do that, but can't.

Are the CDI and Stator hard to fix if one of them is indeed the problem?

the cdi is just a plug in part. Little box. The stator u have to pull the magneto off and it is under it. I have found it is cheaper to buy good used parts off ebay and start changing stuff until it is fixed. If you take it somewhere they will charge you as much in laybor as you could have bought most your parts for. And whatever you have left over you can just resell. I just fixed a snowmobile and got a cdi, coil, and stator buying them one at a time and had about 160.00 into parts and now I am selling off the cdi/coil and should get some of my money back. last time I had one in the shop they charged me 100.00 and didn't do anything good for me. sry I am new at this just trying to help out...Jeff

Ahh okay, cool. I'll take a look at the stator and CDI this week.

I was just given the phone number of a local ATV business owner who is a "250R expert" and I'm told he should have any part I need.

Like another member suggested I would check the connections and make sure the ground is clean and tight. If that doesn't help then go to the wiring at the kill switch and trace the wires down to the connector. Disconnect connector then test for spark.

I have had a 86, 88, and a 89 trx250r and they are just great quads! Nothing like that 2-cycle motor ripping it up!
