Default TRX250TE FourTrax Recon ES Honda 2006

Electric shift isn’t working. Will work for about 2 minutes then it won’t shift up or down. Have replaced the angle sensor, shift motor, handlebar switch, cleaned all the connections with contact cleaner and still nothing. I am at a loss.

Is the gearchange indicator flashing a Morse code on the display? If it does, this code can be read off to tell you what is at fault. A high voltage to the ECU will make it stop working, when you start up the battery voltage drops, a couple of min of charging will then top it up, and a faulty voltage regulator would start overcharging. This is just a possibility but check voltage at battery with engine running, absolute max is 15v, should really be 14.5v or lower. Another possibility is the speed sensor faulty, causing a fault when you get to a certain speed, if you have a speedo, does it work?

Yes it blinks 3 times, which is the angle sensor which was replaced. I’ll check the voltage today. Hopefully I’m just missing something simple.

Clean shift engine gears honda use a paste to lube these gears and in time the paste gets real gummy and wont let gear move freely I use gear oil and grease blended together then apply in gear box the gear oil help keep the grease wet which makes easier shifts and rotations of the gears

The angle sensor fault code can throw people, what it actually means is you have pressed the button to change gear, if angle sensor doesn't send the signal that gearchange has happened by three seconds, the computer fault codes. What I have found is, it is often a slowing shift motor, usually due to worn brushes, this makes gearchanges slow and, if they take over three seconds the angle sensor code comes up. Gummy gears is, as papa hog scoot wrote, another possibility, so grease them when you have the motor off to check brushes. Warning, the motor is simple but a pig to get back together.

I have also had a bad bearing in cover so I would make sure all the bearing rotate freely next time you go into it

Thanks everyone. Hopefully no rain tomorrow so I can tear it all apart and get this thing working.
