2001 Honda Rubicon 500 no spark
#1
I have searched for this thread and had no responses.
End result is the Computer has been discontinued. How can I trust a used computer.
Here is the story,
Bike has been setting for a while. When I parked it, fuel was running out of the carb. Suspected float stuck or at lease the needle valve stuck. Ordered a new carb and installed. Hooked up fuel, applied choke, engine starts. All was cool, as it was idling it died. I thought there was a fuel supply problem. There was fuel getting to the carb. Pulled the spark plug and found no spark. Replaced the ignition coil. Have been told to check the ignition switch on the handlebar but have not yet checked. Also, have not check the spark ignitor/pickup coil. But told the computer is a known problem. What would your next step be. Waiting for input. Thanks

Do all the tests at the CDI plug that the workshop manual tells you to do. This gives an indication where the fault lies. If all test out as OK, it has to be a CDI fault, though I have never known a Rubicon CDI to fail, on other Honda models of the early 2000s CDI failure is more common. However the early Rubicon seems to have a single unit for both gear control and ignition, later machines have a separate gear control ECU.

Yes, 450s were a pain for loosing spark if the regulator blew. Trouble is you can't test regulators without the engine running. However I think disconnecting the reg would make it spark again if it has a shorted out reg.
