Default Installing a Warn 2.5 winch, need help.

I am currently installing a warn 2.5 winch on my Prairie 650 4x4. Instructions say to connect to a hot wire that comes from the key and only has power when key is turned on. What is the best way to get to that cluster of wires and which wire is best suited for that. If you have a pic that would help also.

Thanks for your time.

Olpapa,

It's also a good idea to install a toggle switch on this power supply aswell.........this way....ya just switch the toggle on (aswell as the key switch) when you want to use the winch. This saves the solenoid being powered up at all times (when the key is on) which will give a longer solenoid life.

That solenoid being "powered up: is not a problem. The solenoid only does something when the in or out switch is commanding a change, ie when you hit the button..then the internal relay is energized providing power to winch...

Correct me if i'm wrong....but on the normal 3-pin solenoid....you have a high side input...a high side output...and a solenoid (plunger0 power supply which operates the solenoid. Battery power goes to the high side input.....high side output goes to the forward reverse switch (rocker switch)....and it's this switch which gives you the polarity reversal for forward reverse action of the winch. there is no tie back from the rocker switch to the solenoid...therefore....the solenoid, if connected to a switched power source whether it be ignition power...or whatever is always "energized".......this solenoid is actually acting as a relay for switching the battery power to the rocker switch.
