BF 650 clutch kit or just springs?
#1
I'm thinking my next mod will be either a clutch kit or the EPI black spring. It seems everyone is running the black spring instead of a clutch kit. Why, other than the price, would you do this over the clutch kit?
EPI has a Pro Clutch Kit which includes one set of EPI "Belly Buster" weights, primary spring and secondary spring for $189.99. Seems like a lot but they claim it has the most aggressive acceleration possible.
Then there is the Sport/Utility clutch kits which looks to include weights, primary and secondary springs for $75.99.
Or the black spring which is I think about $25.
I do plow with my quad, but other than that it's used for some hardcore redneck trailriding which includes (of course) the mudpits . I plan on getting some 27" mud tires (589s, Gators, Mudbugs, Mudzillas or Outlaws). My only mods are listed in my sig and I weigh about 190lbs, if any of that matters. With all that being said, what set up would be better for me? I'm kinda leaning towards the Sport/Utility clutch kit, but I'm seeking opinions before I get set on anything. Also, how is the clutch kit or spring going to affect my top end?
Thanks.

Another approach is to do the clutch weights and the jetting until they are right on for your altitude, then test some springs which aren't very expensive and keep the ones you want. The reason a lot of people do the black spring is to help keep the belt from slipping, wearing the sheaves, long belt life. Not really too much choice on the secondary spring....you don't want it too stiff or it loses power thru friction and brings the top end down significantly. I sometimes wonder if the stiffer secondary spring is even necessary.
Then the only thing you have to decide on is the primary spring. That's my approach to it, because the jetting has to work with the clutch weights, first priority.

Since you say you plow and your getting 27in mud tires I would say you should get the black spring. The rest is up to you, but with the combo of big heavy tires (like mudzillas) and plowing with them it is alot of strain on a belt. I would use low as much as possible also. Yes the secondary will lose some top speed as well as the tires.
