Default Lost top speed with P700 pri spring and belt

Due to a smoked belt I decideded to replace the belt and primary(drive) spring on my 03 Prairie 650 with 225 miles on it. I had previosly installed the EPI black secondary and had read that the 700 drive spring was a good performance alternative. I had a little problem with the deflection after installing the 700 belt but I got it to .8" with a slight intermittent squeel at idle which I here is the way I want it. I used to be able to get 62Mph on the 1/2 mile strech of road, now I can only get 59Mph. All test conditions are static, temp, elivation, motor temp, fuel, the only difference is the belt and spring.

Any insight would be appreciated as I read I would gain a couple MPH with the 700 belt.

Thanks

I think that your belt is still too tight, and therefore, too short. Get some more shims.

It seems that I have read quite a bit on here about a properly adjusted belt will squeek a bit with a brand new belt, when the belt breaks in I understand that it will be fine.

Do you think that is why I am loosing top speed? I know with a snowmobile if you have the track to tight you loose all kinds of top speed.

How long does it take for a Kawi belt to break in?

If you put on the new P700 belt and used only the original shims that were on the machine when it was new, then the belt is almost certainly too tight.

With 250 miles on my 03 p650 it had 1.5" of deflection, the belt squeeled on take off and burnt trying to back out of thin mud, so the belt was way to loose from the factory.

All the web sites say use the 700 belt as it is wider and stronger, I am certain that took some of the deflection out.

Originally it had 1.6mm of shim, now it has 1.2mm and .8" of deflection, that is on the low end of perfect.

I know you said it will only go 59 mph. now but, with that combination it should be quicker to 59mph. Is that true in your situation ?

Its hard to tell, I didn't measure a distance or time. I can still beat both my buddies AC 650s with VDI snorkles, clutch kit, jets and HL modules, they are both dead even and I can pull away all the way up to 59. Both of theres will top out at 63

Im not sure but , I think if you go for top end you may lose that advantage you have on the 2 AC 'S. My 02 p 650 would top out at 59 or 60 with the mods listed below but I had the red spring and icm , I could not keep the front end down on take off ,from take off against a Pol 700 I would stomp him 4 or 5 quad lenghts and all then he would slowly reel me in , But its not only top end theres no way the pol 700 could keep up to me on the trails or on the hill climbs or in the lake mud across the flats.I would settle for the instant snap that you have now, the temptation to go faster on top is way strong and I know it is hard to resist. Most of the mods cost you too much $$ for minimal gains . Also once you put some miles on the new belt your top may pick up a few mphs. good luck
