I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the stock rims are steel.

They seem to be heavy and not as strong.

Aluminum aftermarkets appear to be lighter and stronger than stock.

The prarie 400's have come from the factory with aluminum rims since 1999.
In the push to make the 650 weigh in under 600# to the point they had to remove the trailer hitch, I would bet that wheels are a lightweight aluminum.

My stockers are aluminum.

I also have some steel rims. They are 3lbs heavier each. They cost $39 each. And they are quite tough.

In case anyone's wondering, I don't think you need to worry about the strength of the aluminum rims.My 500 quadrunner had alum rims and I smoked a big rock with it,,,it put a big dent in the wheel and took a 2 inch chunk out of my tire.I put on a new tire and ran the dented wheel for the 5000 kliks that I kept the quad.It didn't even shake.I've seen yamaha steel wheels bend worse from a lot less!!!
