Some people may want to put in a red drive spring, but I didn't want one. But the main thing you need to do when you change your spring is to check your belt deflection. Odds are that your belt is on the loose side from the factory. If you get your belt on the tight side, it will cause your belt to last a lot longer, in addition to the benefits of a black spring.

I you ride a lot of tight/technical trails, you probably do NOT want the red(drive clutch spring), stick with the black(driven clutch) spring. With the red spring, the throttle becomes similar to an on/off switch. Not so good for tight, slow work.

I think just the black spring and tightening up the belt is the best solution for most people, Make sure you put the belt back on oriented the same way it was on from the factory. It is possible to put the belt on backwards and I have heard reports of belt slippage if this occurs. Just look at the writing on the belt when you remove it and put it back on the same way. The writing on my belt looking straight at the clutch had the writing facing me as you would read it.

I installed just the black spring and I ride in much of the same condistions that you do and it works great just by it self. You do not need any other mods. for the black spring and like said before the red spring makes it engauge at a higher RPM and makes it not as trailable to most people.

Also, the arrows on the belt help too.

Yes, for most people, the black secondary spring and re-shimming the clutch (if belt is loose) is all that needs to be done. This greatly increase belt and clutch life. A properly adjusted belt and the black spring will also show a performance increase over a sloppy belt. I am not talking night and day performance, but the belt does grab much better when set up right.

As for belt orientation, I just remember to put it back on so that you can read the "KAW" logo, while hunkered down on the RH side of the bike, working on it
