Default CDI V-Force

Hey gang, I called my dealer and asked him what was up with the top end on the V. He said the timing was retarded big time. I talked with one of his service guys, and he was pretty confident that the timing could be easily adjusted. Has anyone increased the timing yet? As far as CDI, will someone give us a little CDI 101? Is this just an upgrade to advance the timing?

Computerized distributorless ignition. It is a little box that controls engine timing. It's main input signals are crank position (used to generate spark at just the right timing) and vehicle velocity (used to signal the CDI to retard the timing so you cant go too fast).

It looks like a lot of manufacturers are getting on the band wagon to get us performance CDI's. We 650 owners have been waiting for these things for a year and a half. The wait has been very discouraging. We have money waiting to spend.

Thanks nyroc, do you think there is anything to gain by advancing the initial timing? Would this mess with the cdi?

People have done this on the prairies, from what I hear it gives a little more bottom end, but does nothing for the top end. I talked to Penland about advancing the time and was told that unless you have a very sensitive rear end, you'll never notice the change. The CDI can't be bypassed or modified at this point, so you'll have to wait for aftermarket parts.

I called Big Gun today. They said cdi was definitely in the works, but was at least several months away.
