problem with 02 90X
#1
Out riding yesterday and I have a problem with my son's 90 X that is happening more often, hope I can get some advice on it. He will ride for a while maybe 1/2 hour or so then it will start to bog and backfire then stop running. It happens all of the sudden and does not matter if it is WOT or putting around. It will start right back up then go another hundred yards then do it again. It feels almost like an electrical problem but I am not sure. Also it drinks gas like it was a collage student at a frat party. One take will last about an hour. Anyone have any ideas what I can chek. thanks

What does your plug look like? When it stops and starts again you said it would 100 yards and do it again. After that what happens? What have you check on it so far? Is the fuel filter clean? What about the tank?

Thanks for the responce TRex, So far dont know on any of your questions. After it acts up it will start up again go another 100 or so yards then bog, backfire and stop again. Then it may start and go with no problems for another 15-20 min. I have not checked the filter figuring that since it was running just fine that would not be the problem. Plug I have not checked when it is acting up either however I did notice that it was low on oil when I got it home. Maybe it is like my generator that when the oil is low it will not run??? Again thanks for the responce I did not think anyone was going to.

I would tend to agree it is a electrical problem. Most of the time if a electrical parts goes out, it goes out. If it is a heat problem, try running a hair dryer on the cdi until it is good and hot. also, take your flywheel off and clean the stator. Most of the time a stator goes out before anything else. Are the plugs clean? The only ones to really worry about are teh ones coming off the stator, the cdi and the positive wire to the coil. It is just crimped on, so make sure it is tight.

My son has a 90x 02' and I had this type of problem it was hard to start and when he gave it gas it would bog down and stop. My problem was the carburator, we ride in the sand and a tiny piece of sand got in the jet and was causing the quad to not allow the fuel it needed to repsond to the little guys throttle demands. I broke the carb down and cleaned it out now it runs like a champ.
