I put my daughter on a 50 when she was 5. She is going to be 7 this year. She is just now ready for a bigger quad. The 50s out there are plenty fast and are much better to learn on in my opinion. Safety first when it comes to kids.
The great thing also about going with a smaller quad is that you can sell them used for just about what you paid for them. Also if for some reason it turns out your kid dosnt like riding your not out so much money.

wickedryder,
What type of trails for your 5 year old girl and what's your long term plans for your future mini-Quad. Another factor to consider is the current and future size of your girl. I've seen some 5 year olds the size the 3 year olds, like my daughter, and I've seen 5 year olds the size of 9 year olds, like my middle son.
If you only plan on doing "soft" trail riding, go with the 80/90 range and use the throttle control screws for a few years (or until she can handle it). If you are planning on racing, then your daughters age may be forced into the 50cc class. If you plan on "tough" riding trails with lots of deep mud, like my local trails, then go with the 80/90 range. To me, ground clearance and "bottom end" power (for mud spinning) is more importance then top end speed or "fitting" into certain racing classes.
As you can tell, it's NOT an easy choice to make when one's kid is age 5.
Hope this helps...

Well, dont let "bang for the buck" decide for you. Your child needs to fit on the quad.
IMO the 50 and 80 Yams are a poor choice. Darn 4 strokes that small just dont have enough ooomph at times. (I've had them) The LT50 or LT80 are very reliable (I've had both of these also) and have the power to go where they want.
Good luck and have fun.
