Whoops, little late on my post. Should have read whole thread before I posted. Congratulations Cat500, have fun and keep us updated on the little guys progress on his new machine and if you are still happy with your decision.

you should get the lt 80 it was the second quad i rode and i loved it
limit the screw on the throttl to about where it has enough power to move and gradually unscrew it
plus you can turn that into a quick little quad once he gets older

Good choice on the 50 ,Like big ugly says get a quad that fits your kid now not one he can grow into ,all resale on little quads is very good so if in a year you decide to sell it and it is in decent shape your only losing $500 which is less than one trip to the emergency room.
Although the Lt 80 I feel would have been to big for your kid, it is still a excellent quad with unmatched dealer support that the newer quad companies just cannot match,it is nice to buy a quad that every major city has a least one dealer.

He just rode the new LT80 around the yard for the first time today. He was thrilled. He can reach the footpegs but he doesn't have enough leg to get to the brake pedal yet. That thing is really fast when the throttle is unscrewed.
I have a pic of it on my page now.
