Taking LT80 to california
#1
I am working in Texas for the next month and I am looking to buy a 2002 Suzuki LT80 and take back to california for my son. California has that Damn red and green sticker registeration law. the DMV web sight say's that if the model year 2002 and older get's a green sticker and all newer ones get a red sticker. The question that I have is what is the rule on bringing a 2002 bike into the state? what sticker will I get? Is there a diffrence from a LT80 sold in Texas and a LT80 sold in california? Any help will be nice.

I think you will be just fine. You can still buy certain 2004 4-strokes and get green sticker's. The red stickers are mainly for 2-strokes and racing 4-strokes.

I really believe you'd get a "green" sticker for it as it's a 2002. The Green/Red sticker was revised from 1997 to 2003 and newer 2 & 4 strokes. From what I understand California has the strickest EPA and noise retrictions. For instance to meet the requirements Yamaha had to muffle down the YFZ450 and set the carb very lean to meet the requirements. If I were you I'd call the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in california and ask them which sticker it would get (Red/Green) before buying one.

Check the VIN, if the 8th number/letter is a 3 or a "C", then, you will get a red sticker. All other combinations should get you a green sticker. Good Luck

It's all OHVs: Quads, MCs, etc.
It is just whether the bike complies with California emissions standards for OHVs. My Warrior actually has a sticker on the air box lid to the tune of "Compliant with model year 1997 and newer California emissions requirements."
This question sounds familiar dudman...Club ATV West?
You will be "Non-Compliant" BUT grandfathered in with other 2002 and older OHVs.
Now, have fun transferring an out of state OHV into CA. DMV has issues with it. Not just a one button press like for a regular vehicle. Unless of course the clerk has done them before.

Hey thanks everybody. I have talked to the california DMV and was told (by four diffrent offices . I never belive just one of those commi. state agency offices) that the "3 or C in the eighth digit of the vin only applies to 2003 OHV's and newer. and that the red sticker DOES NOT apply to OHV's that are model year 2002 and older. Thanks for everyones reply's and yes warrior I did post the same question on "ATV West" I am from Travis AFB in northern CA.
