How long did it sit before you made your purchase? I had mice get in my Warrior's air breather once... what a mess. Old gas can gum a carb.. but is sounds like either float or plugged vent. Easy to check that, just take off the gas cap while it is running, if it runs OK, you have a plugged vent. Might just be a spider's nest in there somewhere.
