Using the kick starter full time?
#1
Hi,
Just recieved our new GPX Raider 90 a couple weeks ago. Believe these are the same as Unison or built by them? Anyway my little one will be racing this in the spring and wondering if the kick starter will hold up if electric starter is removed with battery and associated hardware?
Thanks,
Brian

No Problemo
FYI: after compression is increased with race modifications, the stock starters on it will not turn the motor over, thus the kick start is used 100%.

My battery was dead so I used the kick start. Only problem I noticed was that none of my lights would work.
Don't have a high compression piston, but with a high compression head my electric start still works great.

.
Many times, my son left his front driving lights on while his engine was off. In very little time, his battery went dead. That was until I connected its front lights onto his ignition key ON/OFF wiring.
If you plan to use a kick start as your only means to start your unit, ensure you keep its gears well lubricated. The open CVTs &/or vented areas of the kick start areas can "gum up" very quickly. To view pictures of how it "may" look like behind your plastic tranny cover, surf:

Note: Pictures from an '03 Pred-90. Other brands differ.
Hope this helps as well...

Thanks for the info. Will probably remove battery etc. for races and put it back on for all other riding. Does anyone know what wiring you would have to change for lights to work off lighting coil when engine is running without battery?

For your GPX Raider 90 unit, I don't know.
As a suggestion, remove your battery and take a digital DC 12V meter and while its engine is running, "read" the output from the battery + and battery - wire. Obtain readings ast idle and your "average" RPM speed. The 12V watts output is daytime running light bulb size what range you could use. Most 90cc regulator / rectifier (spelling) are within 30W to 90W range. Therefore, daytime running lights should be around 1/2 this range. Thus, allowing recharge of the battery when its installed.
Hope this helps...
