Dad needs a quad
#11
Well the tow vehicle took more of my time last nite than I had hoped. I didnt get a chance to upload a pic yet but will try next week. I got my father in law a blue 250 and he loved the color. We spent about 2 hrs putting it together, which really only was putting on the front wheels and mounting the handle bars. We loctited about 2 dozen or more screws/nuts that go into the body work and we also loosened the chain a little. I changed the engine oil with Castrol Syntec Blend 10-40, it took 2 quarts and drained about 10 oz's of gear oil out of the rear end and replaced it with approx 24 ozs of 80/90 wt gear oil.
It fired right up and we let it idle for about 10 minutes and then took it for a ride. It has plenty of lowend power which was suprising to me for a twin cylinder. The shocks are decent but have zero damping but do absorb bumps ok. The dual a-arm setup is very strongly built, but it doesnt offer a lot of trave. The rear shocks are sort of set up for a pivoting action sort of like they were going for a independant like wheel travel. It works ok up to 3rd gear but would get exciting at higher speeds over rough ground. The rear end is a open diferential type and while this is great for sharp turns it doesnt do much for traction. The wheel with the least amount of traction gets all the power. That could get annoying on the trail. Overall its a decent quad and it will most likely do everything my father in law ever wants it to do. But I dont think its good for everyone. I definitely dont think it would make a good trail quad because of the open diferential and the springy shocks.

hey mwq,
glad to see you back, when you say open diff. you mean like a car has right, not limited slip or posi rear diff, I think these are the same bike I saw from loncin or tank or a bunch of others I really wasn't empressed with them. they need to come up with a 350-450 cc engine for these things to haul me around and some junk, just not enough power to do any thing. these bike's have been out for about 2 yrs now with very little improvement they still need alot of work to become a good utility quad in my eyes.

I would have to agree with you on the need for improvement. With a few mods it could be a better quad, but as it is, its probubly better suited for flat ground.
