prime~fuel will run all the time.
On~is off when the motor is not turning.
The petcock is vaccum operated. You should have it in the run position.
Other than that, a good carb cleaning may be in order. There could be a spec of crud holding the float needle open (altho it's doubtful). Remove both jets and the brass seat for the needle and clean.

Was the gas leaking externally? If you don't see any leaks from the outside, then their is a good chance that it is leaking internally. If so then your float valve may not be closing in side the carb. Thus allowing the carb to over fill which would then begin filling the crankcases. If the left side crank seal was bad this would then let the filling crankcases leak the gas into the clutch area. What about the vent lines/drain on the carb? Are they wet or plugged up? Have you had this machine running yet or have you seen/heard it run?

how does a guy go about changing the oil on these lt 80s.i can`t find the dipstick or the oil drain bolt.i found one in the very back of the machine under the skid plate.is this the drain bolt and were do you fill the oil from.i am going to buy a manual but would like to drain the oil before i let my kids tear up the dirt.

Yes, On the bottom in the back is where you drain the tranny oil.
The bolt on top is where you fill it. There is a bolt beside the front sprocket, that's the weep hole. Remove the bolt and fill tilll oil comes out.
10-40 is fine.
