Big name brand atv's VS. the little chinese
#81
hi yall, Thanks for the help. My Neighbor is an ATV nut and saw me trying to guess why I could not get my kid up the driveway.
He adjusted the speed control (govenor ???) and moved some screws on the carburator. Nowwww the atv has some power behind it. He suggested I take it to a friend of his to give it a real tune up.
Now it seems to be leaking oil. Acording to him, it seems that the place where we bought put too much oil in it. He said to just keep an eye on the oil level and make sure that it does run out and if it continues leaking it might be some kind of gasket or something where the chain goes.
But so far seems good.

so what i'm getting out of all this is name brand or off brand form taiwan? stay away form chinese? i'd like to get 2 machines for the kids and not break the bank doing so. i don't mind wrenching but i don't want to be doing it after or before every ride! still confused on what to look for in off brand atv's.

Pretty much it Raz. That is what I decided when I bought the Unison. I don't like wrenching all the much unless it is on a John Deere that I am restoring.

Just an observation...
I think the reputation of the 'china quads' hurts because of a lack of dealer support, coupled with user error. Of course, the lack of a dealer network is, in part, what keeps the price of these atvs so low.
When I read the posts of trouble with the China atvs, i get a flood of ideas on what to check. Leaking oil: 1. did you over fill it? 2. cracked casing? 3. leaking gasket? 4. being forced out of a vent? 5. O-ring/seal leaking? Some people encounter a problem like leaking oil and say 'omg, its a POS, they sold me junk!' Obviously Gaby has/had an issue with oil and throttle, and I swear to god I'm not trying to mock her/him in anyway, you only have to look through this forum to see that 10 other people have said the same things about a China quad! But why are they saying they have problems? Because a dealer is not there to set up, or the 'dealer' does not care enough/know enough to help the customer.
My China quad was bought from a furniture store! The first thing I did was check the fluids, suspension, ride it myself. Unfortinatley allot of riders do not have the experience to evaluate a atv. They want the "Jap" quad, hop on and go riding, top notch build quality, big dealer can fix that, hop on and go riding way of life, but don't want to pay for it.
Before you buy one of these quads I think you need to ask YOURSELF if YOU are ready to put in some work, get your hands dirty, do some problem solving. Asking people on the forums for advice is great, but realize that you are getting a quad that is, in my opinion, a step down from the Jap quads.
I also own a China quad, and I know what I have. I look it over more often then a Jap quad, I've owned Honda's and Suzuki's in the past and loved em, but that was when I could afford a $5500 machine. True, my China quad was bought for me, and I would probably not have risked my own cash on it; however, knowing what I know now, I would. Your attitude coming into the purchase will have a great impact on your overall happiness with the quad. All that said, I've put less then $10 in maintenance into my china quad in the last 6 months. Just remember its YOU not ME that has to deal with YOUR broken quad, so I can tell YOU all day long about how I'm happy MY china quad but when YOURS breaks down YOU will be responsible for fixing/getting it fixed.

BTW, that quote is from Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged". It's a great quote, too, for those who understand.
I had read that some years ago, and had forgotten that quote. It's a pretty good read, but it does take some work to get thru as it's a pretty long book.... She had some pretty significant points of view; enough so that is actually a "Ann Rand Institute".

And Eton makes the 250 for Bombardier, and Kymco makes the Arctic cat 50 and 90. Also, the small Kawasaki and Polaris bikes are Taiwanese. there are others but I can't remember them right now.

The next one I buy will be a Jap,dont know which brand yet, probly a Kawi or Honda.
Not that I dont like the RedCat 110,cuz it is a very good first time ATV for a youngin,as are other China brands.Only problem its had was the battery, but fires right up and pulls me and my son around good, but thats still less the 200lbs.

In China, there are many many manufacturers, exporters, suppliers in ATV line. Some quality is cheap, some is good. If you want to import Chinese quads bike, you should look for a right person who knows the Chinese market well. He/She will quote you the Real Bike for you. Because in each factory, it has the advantaged models. Seldom factories producing all the models in high quality.
