TaoTao 125 Stalls when Pressing Throttle
#1
After about a week of owning the ATV it has begun to stall when pressing the throttle. It starts fine and will idle most of the time ok, but when you press the throttle it seems to choke itself out (bog down) and stall. Oddly enough if I put the choke on it doesn't stall when pressing the throttle and I can rev it up.
I took the carb apart and made sure the jets weren't clogged. After second time doing this it seemed to run ok for a day then the problem came back.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, we are on vacation and having 1 son with a working ATV and the other without is a sad situation.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, thanks for the welcome. I am already glad to have found this forum, lots of great info.
Yes the fuel filter is the stock one that came with it. Does is sound like it's letting partilcles through and clogging the jets?

Thats what it sounds like to me..and it may be coming apart and clogging something.. part of the Chinese deal is parts that look just like the real thing.. but dont actually work like it.. filters, spark plugs, and rubber are just a few of them..

It is almost certain to be dirt or water in the carb. Clean it out and fit a new fuel filter, if it is water, clean the tank out as well (as best you can,) there is dirt or water in the tank that is getting into the carb.

I appreciate the response. Is the carb on these pretty simple to work on?

We don't get Tao Taos in the UK unless the UK importer calls them something else, but for all carbs, as little dismantling as possible is my way, and it works. Remove float bowl, remove the jets (two or three) blow through them with compressed air, blow through all passageways with compressed air. Check the jets are clean by holding them to the light, clean out the float bowl, if there is any water in there you may have to empty the tank and get the water out of it too. Re-assemble carb, no altering mixture screws, no new parts unless the float chamber gasket has torn. Some Chinese carbs have "tamper proof screws" on the float bowl, either drill the heads off to get into it, and fit new screws, or buy a new carb instead, but you may need to fiddle with mixture screws and jet sizes on a new carb.
