Checked further into it today. The newer filter has a stainless screen AND body. The older one had a galvanized steel body with stainless screen. That is where the price increase came from. The galvanized one has been discontinued.

Got the spec on the "Manufacturer direct" filter today....Here's the scoop.....

"The K&P Oil Filter is far superior to any paper filter you can buy. It filters 35 microns absolute."

"This means that no particle larger than 35 microns will pass through this filter at ANY oil temprature OR density."

"A traditional paper element filter are rated at 15 to 80 microns. The ammount varies with the paper filters because it fluctuates with oil temrature and density. The K&P stainless steel filters do not."

"Stainless steel filters should last the lifetime of your machine. Simply remove, rinse in clean solvent, and replace. Monitor wear of internal engine componets by inspecting the particles trapped by the K&P filter. Avoid catastrophic failures by detecting problems early."

"K&P stainless steel filters perform equally well from cold start-up through extreme heat without loss of protection. A one inch square of our stainless steel micronic filter material will flow 1.9 gallons of 90 weight per minute at only 1 PSI pump pressure [Typical filter size is 14 sq. in.]. Standard paper filters do not flow well when the oil is cold, allowing the bypass valve to open and allow unfiltered oil into the engine."

"The stainless steel micronic filter cloth is also unaffected by water and moisture, unlike standard paper filter material which swells in the presence of moisture, closing off filter pores and reducing flow."

"Available for most popular four stroke dirtbikes and ATVs."

I don't know what RS is selling......but it sure isn't these.

Just thought I would pass this along so that you guys could get a better understanding of the screen filters.

Oh.....and one more thing......Cannondale didn't drop these filters due to the way it performs. They explained to us that it was to lower manufacturer bottom line cost of producing the quads and motorcycles.

Knowsalot,

That would be about 8 or 9 paper filters for the price of the metal one you are selling. If this is a lifetime filter we all might be better in the long run with the metal one. I know those are the specs but would you suggest going with this new $70 metal filter. If so, I might be giving you a call tomorrow

So you are saying the screen material is the same but the new one uses 100% stainless construction. Sounds like a good upgrade to me. At least when the one I bought gets mangled (I know I will mangle it sometime) I know where to get another one. I was skeptical about using a metal filter but it sounds like the metal screen is THE ONLY way to go. Thanks for the good info.

I don't see any reason not to go with the steel screen filter. Especially if you are a racer.[Which is why all you guys have one]

I know that the enduro guys wont ride without them. When they buy our bikes, there are usually at least a thousand dollars worth of accessories installed on it before it leaves our store. It used to be that nothing was more important to these guys than hand guards, but the steel screen oil filters are becoming more of a hot topic with these guys and now have these on our "build sheets" for the four strokes before they leave the store.

You do save money IN THE LONG RUN with these filters, but some guys cringe at the thought of paying 70.00 for an oil filter regardless of the fact that it will last as long as you own your quad.

Another factor is with the lazy guys. Alot of people just don't want to do ANY maintenance and just ride. They would probally prefer to pay the $8.00 for the paper filter every oil change rather than taking 5 minutes to clean the steel filter.
