HEELCLICKER CLUTCH QUESTION
#21
How about this question, because I too am looking at maybe purchasing a clutch kit. Do these kits make a noticable difference on a quad? Just any clutch kit in general. Not trying to stir things up here just looking for an answer to a general question. Thanks

I tried the Heel Clicker in my Xplorer and did not think it was enough of an improvement over what I was running to be worth the money. My point with that statement is that I called Dan and I tried every combination he suggested and when it was all done he told me if I wasn't satisfied to ship it back. I did and he not only refunded me my complete purchase price to include shipping he also refunded my return shipping. Very nice to deal with and if I were to purchase a SP 500, 600, or 700 I would try it again.

This just depends on what you want to acheive and how much money you want to spend.I had the Erlandson clutch kit on my 500cc Sportsman.I also had the Hot Seat and Heel clicker kit on my Xplorer 400cc.No one kit seemed better than the other.Prices ranged from 170.00-----to-----189.00 bucks just for the kits alone.I was especially DISAPPOINTED with the Heel Clicker kit because of all the HYPE there was about this kit.My mechanic also contacted Dan or Randy[I cant remember his name?] at H/C and wound out changing the primary spring 3 or 4 differant times before I could get the Xplorer to wheelie again like it did with the Hot Seat kit in it.Problem with this set up was that my engagement speed was VERY high and undesireable. They never offered me my $$ back either,or I would have accepted it.
I also just experimented with changing only the primary spring [25 bucks] on a few other quads. And its my opinion that a complete clutch kit gives very little gains for the money spent vs just changing over the primary spring. But its your money!

Skidkid thank you for making my point. DAN strives hard to please the customer that is the most important thing. No matter what clutch kit you use it should improve the performance over stock. If you think just changing the primary spring will do what you want, hey go for it. I have been there done that, I can only tell you what my experience was. It raised the engagement while it lowered the top end in LOW GEAR not sure about high gear as it was such a dissapointment that I took it out. If that don't trip your trigger ask them for a refund, come back with what they tell you. have a used White and a used GREEN POLARIS spring laying around here some where. Hey it was only $50 bucks down the drain, why buy an expensive clutch kit, that if it hadn't worked I could have sent back and had my money back. Instead of laying around the garage, with the springs I can't return. Oh yeah have a set of lighter weights that can't be returned also, laying around here in the garage somewhere that was another $30 bucks plus install. lets see I only shelled out about a $100 that didn't work, then I spent $158 on something that was guaranteed to work, an it did.
The only other quad I rode with a different kit had a HOTSEAT in it I didn't care for the harsh engagement. We here at Altitude have to do things differently. Many of the kits advertise that they aren't for use over 2000ft. I have talked to several dealers that sold EPI, I haven't ridden one but they tell me they don't really care for them. They were down on clutch kits till they rode my machine with the HEELCLICKER in it, it's an easy sale from there. They come back with a smile on thier face.
BILLY I will have to jump DAN he should have asked you if you wanted your money back, that RASCAL anyway. For shame FOR shame I don't blame you now that I understand fully what went on.

i never liked the heelclicker system, and i tried it on the sled,
i run thundershift cam arm weights from thunder products since a while then and they work better,no notching of the clutch at all,no need for special springs, instant drop-in kit, easy to install, easy to tune.
give the same or BETTER results than the heels.

Back to the original subject.....
I've been trying to tune a heelclicker on a 600 for a couple of months now, the reconmendations that come with the kit will absolutely inprove the engagement and low end "grab" on the belt. the problem I've been trying to solve is the sheeve's closing too quickly and not letting the rpm's stay high enough to keep me in the power band. After alot of experimentation there are two ways to solve this, you can keep the plastic nut or the stock secondary spring.
The folks at heelclicker were very helpfull, but the bulk of their experience seems to be on snowmobiles NOT atv's. I did alot of R&D on the 600 model for them (too much). They have new weights you can try (lighter) I could of just bought 52g weights and saved myself a ton of trouble and money.
IT's been said my problem doesn't happen on all 600's and conversely some people with 700's or 500's have said keeping the plastic nut helped their mid-range and top-end too..... I guess you just need to play with diffrent configureations.
As far as the heelclicker kit goes, they tried to be helpfull, I've finally got mine tuned, and I'm happy with it (even if it took a while to get right).

Talking to RANDY yes you are talking SLEDS, that is his first love. Dan has been talking to him trying to explain some of the differences that we are running into with quads. I think at last he is getting thru, we are talking 20-40 horses he is talking 120-200 horses. LOL
I getting ready to install the lighter weights in a 04-600 sometime this week, will take some times and shift RPMs before an after.

Now I know why I havent been posting here lately. Bill why do you attack Cob? I have bought a H/C through HIM for my SP500 HO. Your personal attacks on him are uncallled for.
I am getting a 2004 700 next week and will be getting a H/C for it also.
I remember other threads this past spring where you (Bill) got very offensive to other members. Bill, relax man.......its all good!!!
