Big Difference in the 04 & 04.5 Sportsman 500 is the hubs. Don't cheap out and settle for the old hubs.
They will cost you time and money in the long run. The new set up is right off the 600 & 700 and puts the 4x4 system into the front differential, no maintentance, no problems. Adios Polaris hub system. Good riddance.
All the Polaris 500 Sportsmans are H.O.

The gas guage is nice, the inline shifter, eh, so what, the tires, who knows, but getting rid of the hubs is really worth the extra money.

Suzuki Vinsons are fabulous machines. Choice of auto or 5 speed with dual range. Awesome....IF only they had independent rear suspension......Maybe they will get IRS next year as a trickle down from the new King Quad.....

By the way, the 500 Sportsman has much better low end torque and creepability than the 600 & 700, which are higher rpm machines, with their clutches tuned for that higher rpm power. 600 is the best bang for the buck, but the new EFI 700 is the coolest, best, period, and that is because of the EFI.

I hope you have good luck with your new machines I can say that my 700 sportsman tears it up in the snow it has the right combo to go threw mud and snow. Everyone I ride with agrees on that but like i said befere be carfule going down hills because the polaris ebs isent as good as the other manufactures ebs but once you grt used to it you will know what you can do and what you can't do .
[ let us know how the efi 700 is ]
