new brakes... AGAIN
#1
I just put new EBC pads and a new polaris rotor on my 2000 Trailboss, I rode 60 miles and the pads are gone, second set in 2 rides. The dealer says there is nothing wrong with the brake calipers. What could be eating pads so quickly?? I was riding in dusty and slightly muddy conditions, I hardly braked and I made sure I wasn't hitting the foot brake by accident. My front pads are holding out pretty well.
I'd appreciate any ideas, I can't afford new pads every ride !!!

There is a hex head set screw on your caliper behind the pads on the inside. You might need to back that off a turn or two so there isn't constant pressure on your rotor from the pads.
I change my pads once a summer, and I thought that was bad.

i beleive that screw your referring to is only on the front calipers and it is used to adjust..if your wearing rears faster than fronts i would think there is a problem with the caliper..jack it up and see if the caliper is dragging..thats the only thing it can be..theres no way if all is set up right that youll eat pads that fast, not even the cheap ones they put in at the factory..my originals lasted like 65 hours and i do like 80 % mudding so i would check the caliper..just cause the dealer says its good doesnt always mean hes right

From what you say, it sounds like the caliber is sticking. I own a trail boss and on our last ride, my wife rolled it over and broke the front break handle off. I rode it the rest of the trip back (about 15 miles) using the rear foot brake only and we were in some steep hills that required lots of brakes. The rear pads are showing very little signs of wear after this. Also, my wife has a habit of setting the parking brake and riding for awhile with it still on.
I would jack the rear end up, bleed the rear brake caliber real good, and rotate the wheels to determine if the pads are indeed dragging. If the calibers are not dragging, I do not know what the problem is.

Man and I was thinking about giveing my dealer Heck about mine being nearly wore out at 900 miles. Man you have really got a problem and you are useing the EBC pads on the second time around wow its good you didn't use the standard. Man if you are not useing the foot brake for a foot rest you have got serious problems, some of the answers from the other fellows sound like some awful good suggestions.
To bad your dealer is not being much help, heck mine would be on this problem in a heart beat.

I slacken my foot brake right off because I was standing on it all the time when riding and went through the back pads fast. Now I only use the hand brake and in case of a emergency ever comes up I will just bail out.

Maybe it is the EBC pads are for a different rotor(EBC). The rotor that Polaris makes and EBC makes are different material. With the different material being used to create friction, an excessive wear may be in efect. So try the EBC rotors. If this doesnt help i dont know what to tell you. Sell you ATV and get a different companies ATV or write a letter to Polaris and complain about their reliabilty. I guess we keep having to complain untell they change, and dont tell me your ATV has not had a problem with them. I dont think Polaris tests there products for long term reliabilty. Hopefully they will change, If they had just as good as reliabilty as Yamaha or Honda they WOULD be #1.
