SP 500 TRANNY LUBE what is it besides gold
#4
I would personally use either Mobil 1 synthetic ATF or else Mobil 1 synthetic 75W-90 gear oil. They are both less than half the price of Polaris synthetic tranny oil. I would use the ATF if you live in a colder climate, or the gear oil if you live in a hot climate. Hope this helps!!!!

Mudnsnow,
Yes it is a little expensive (all synthetic fluids are) but hardly worth risking the life of the gearbox over. It is changed so infrequently that it is unlikely to bankrupt anyone. Think of it this way, the machine is worth thousands of dollars, the oil is worth peanuts in comparison. Pretty good protection and peace of mind. Oil is cheap.
Guys, careful with the use of automatic transmission fluid. When Hermz talks of regular transmission fluid, he doesn't mean ATF fluid. ATF is hydraulic fluid. The IH stuff Hermz refers to is Hydraulic/Transmission fluid that has much better lubricating qualities than ATF. They can't be interchanged.
In this application we are dealing with a gearbox, not an automatic tranny. The gearbox requires the tough properties of a gear lube type fluid, not ATF.
As you guessed, my vote is to stick with the approved synthetic fluid supplied by Polaris. With the infrequent change intervals, it costs nothing compared to the machine itself or potential repair costs.

I change my oil 2-3 times a year and 9$ for a twelve oz. bottle is not worth it. I was just curious and was going to use Amzoil 75w 90 Synthetic, but thought I might check and see what other people were using. Going through the bike for moose hunting season!

Maybe I have a problem but I keep finding water in the tranny! I have an early 99 model with no cover for where the old style mechanical driven odometer used to be. Im going to seal that up and see if that is the problem. Its not a ton of water. Id be real happy to find none when I am done riding? Most oils are made at one big factory and poured into diferent brand bottles! Thats why I say rebranded!
