Default 04 Kodiak 450 or Polaris Sportsman 400?

I have a 04 Yamaha Kodiak 450, and i recently have been looking at Polaris Sportsman 400. I dont know what I was thinking because i never really even looked into Polaris when i was shopping for a 4wheeler but it seems to me that the Polaris 400 has more cc's and Independent Rear Suspension, a higher ground clearance and atleast $500 cheaper than what I paid for my Kodiak 450. I've already had the belt on the Kodiak slipping sometimes when going through holes and ive been told that Polaris rarely slip for anyreason. Is the Sportsman 400 a better 4wheeler? And if so, my Kodiak has 400 miles on it and its still under warranty, so if i decided to sell it, how much is it worth now? I want to get all that i can for it, naturally. I paid $6996 out the door. Any help and feedback would be greatly appreciated!

The sportsman 400 to me seems a little on the slower and weaker side....but some guys like them....I personally would get a 500HO if you are looking into the quads about that size. The sportsmans ride extremely nice, probably nicer than your pickup truck...to me the sportsman is the caddy of the quads. They seem to have plenty of power and their ride is incredible.

beenmuddin,

If your belt has been slipping it is do to a loose or off breather tube on you CVT. Because you said it was slipping after going thru holes and the fact that this has been said(slipping belt) numerous times and the culprit was that tube. Check it.

As for getting a 400 Polaris I would do as Bradracer suggests and step up to the 500. You state that you paid 6996 for you Kodiak, did you get any extras with that? I paid 6700 and I got winch, tires and wheels and everything else realted to assembly fees and DOC fees.

Once again I would check your connections on your vents and welcome to the forums. AlaskaBoy.

beenmuddin,

One other thing. You wanted to know about selling it and the price you would be able to get for it. Well this is just me and if I was trying to buy it from you I would only offer 5500 tops. the reason is anybody who looks at it is going to wonder what is wrong with it if it only has 400 miles on it, I would be thinking you have problems with it and since you mention it is still under warranty it would make believe it even more. To me you know there is a problem and want whoever to deal with the warranty and getting it fixed. But as I stated that this is me and as they say there is sucker born every minute and there is also that one person who is in the market for the particular quad and might be willing to go to 6000 thousand or alittle better but nowhere near what you paid for it.

Good luck on your decision. I have the same quad and like it very much and would not part with it for a Polaris or anything else, oh, okay maybe a Grizzly or Rhino. AlaskaBoy.

I have a sportsman 400 i agree with bradracer they have enough power the belts rarely slip on them but im kind of a hipocrit on that because my quad is in the shop for belt slipping problems as we speak. They have an incredible ride i think in the long run the sportsman would have been, more for your money. My cousin has a kodiak i drove it and i couldnt believe the difference in the ride i was on his kodiak and when i got off it felt like i was riding a horse for a week.

If a sportsman is in low range the the belt will not slip unless a seal is bad and lets water in the clutch cover housing. The seal is only 12 bucks.

The SP400 is 425 cc, not sure about the yama but it is faster. I think the sp400 would be just as good or better of a UTILITY quad, and that IRS is hard to beat for comfort. Personally I would at least step up to the 500 HO.

Hey guys,

I am getting a kick out of you replying to this thread, since Beenmuddin has not been on since the 30th of April. But what the hey.

Now that the 2005 Kodiak 450's are out I see that it has IRS now so I think that the 2 quads should be very close, the Kodiak is 421cc and the Polaris is 425cc. Wonder what the price difference is?

AlaskaBoy.
